Fat Transfer

Treatment overview

Fat transfer is a breast enhancement procedure that is less invasive than implants or a breast lift, delivering results while requiring less downtime.

Fat transfer involves the removal of fat from another area of the body via liposuction and using that fat to shape and volumise the breasts. This procedure is particularly appropriate for women looking for a modest increase in breast size, also known as a ‘mini-boob job’. Fat transfer breast augmentation is highly popular among those who want to enhance the size and shape of their breasts, but who wish to avoid implants. This results in a soft, natural breast.

Though performed under general anaesthetic, fat transfer is usually a day case surgical procedure, meaning that an overnight stay in hospital is not required. If however you are having a fat transfer procedure in conjunction with other surgery, such as having an implant placed, an overnight hospital stay is generally required while we monitor the first stage of recovery.

FAQ’s

Fat transfer is less invasive than other surgeries, which might involve the removal of skin, the moving of the nipple, or the placement of a foreign body (an implant) through an incision. Fat transfer is less traumatic for the body and therefore requires less recovery time.

It is possible for concerns to arise in the donor site, including excess skin, contour irregularity, dimpling, rippling, and lumpiness, but these risks can be mitigated through gentle massage of the area and the wearing of compression garments while the tissue heals.

Due to advancements in technology, the fat removed by liposuction is treated and prepared for optimal integration into the breast. Rates of ‘take’ for the fat are always improving, and Mr Khoda has an enviable track record of successful fat transfer breast augmentation. You can also take action to increase the likelihood of a good ‘take’ by resting, avoiding strain, wearing compression garments as directed, and avoiding smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol.

In the preceding weeks or before surgery, make sure you eat a balanced, healthy diet, get plenty of sleep, and maintain a steady weight. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water, especially in the last few days before surgery, as dehydration is considered a factor in poor ‘take’ rates.

Most patients say they experience some pain, discomfort, and stiffness over the first few days, but this can usually be kept under control using over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol. It’s important to go slow, avoiding unnecessary exertion or putting strain on the healing wounds, while also wearing the tight-fitting elasticated garments we will provide you with, reducing swelling as well as shaping the breast. Additional taping may also be required to aid this process and will need to be replaced as an outpatient procedure.

In terms of downtime, most patients can return to work anywhere between 1-7 days after surgery, depending on the extent of the procedure and the amount of fat taken from the donor site. Light activities can be resumed when you feel comfortable doing so, and normal activities after a few days, with the exception of intensive exercise.

All surgeries can lead to complications, but Mr Khoda works in a safe and consistent manner to minimise any risks. He uses the non-touch technique, avoiding skin contact with any part of the wound or any substance or surface that will come into contact with the wound, such as the inner surface of dressings. The most common complications with surgery are fat necrosis, oil cysts, lumpiness, asymmetry, bleeding, haematomas, infection, numbness, alteration in nipple sensation, and the need to return to theatre for further procedures. Surgery also presents a risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. It is difficult to predict cup size and you may require a further procedure to provide the desired result. The volume in the breast will change as weight fluctuates and it is imperative to maintain this.
