Treatment overview

Gynaecomastia (enlarged male breasts, commonly referred to as ‘moobs’) affects up to 40% of the male population, leading to anxiety and loss of self-confidence in many.

Some men who suffer from gynaecomastia avoid the swimming pool, outdoor sports, and sunbathing, while others are shy of personal relationships. The condition has an array of potential causes, including diet, physiological make-up, hormones, response to alcohol consumption, and recreational or prescribed drugs. Please see your GP to eliminate the possibility of abnormal or health-related causes before undergoing surgery.

Treatment for gynaecomastia relies upon liposuction – the removal of fat through small incisions – which is highly successful in most cases. Patients who have excess skin or fibrous tissue in the area might be suitable for a more extensive surgical procedure, which although an effective solution for more complex gynaecomastia, also carries more risks. Mr Khoda will discuss your options with you during your in-depth consultation.

FAQ’s

For most patients, gynaecomastia surgery involves making small incisions in the chest and removing excess fat by means of liposuction cannulae, which are inserted through the incisions and manipulated to free and suck out the fat. Depending on the technique used, you might have surgical tapes over the wounds and a surgical drain coming out of each side of the chest when you wake.

The procedure takes 60 – 90 mins, depending on the extent of surgery. If gynaecomastia surgery is performed in conjunction with other procedures, surgery time will be longer.

Patients whose surgery involves liposuction alone can go home on the same day of surgery, but more extensive surgery may require a 1-night stay. You will leave hospital with silicone tape to protect the wound. Though ‘splash-proof’ and safe to wear in the shower, it’s important to pat the tape dry with a towel and use a hair-dryer on a medium or low setting after getting wet to ensure it is entirely dry.

Strenuous activity, including going to the gym, should be avoided for at least four weeks. Avoid driving until you can safely perform an emergency stop without causing damage to your healing wounds.

The procedure has a high success rate, but it’s important to be aware that minor revisions are needed in some patients.

All surgeries can lead to complications, but Mr Khoda works in a safe and consistent manner to minimise any risks. The most common complications with surgery are bleeding, haematomas, infection, numbness, alteration in nipple sensation, and the need to return to theatre for further procedures. Surgery also presents a risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Specific risks associated with gynaecomastia surgery include “saucer dish deformity”, asymmetry, hypertrophic or keloid scarring, bleeding or haematoma, infection, pain, altered nipple sensation, complete or partial loss of the nipple (rare), fat necrosis, asymmetry, chronic deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolus (PE) (very rare), and the need for revision surgery.
