Remove stubborn areas of fat with Dr Ben Khoda

Liposuction

Liposuction Treatment overview

Liposuction is a surgical treatment to remove pockets of stubborn, localised fat that are resistant to normal methods of weight loss such as diet and exercise.

Liposuction is an affordable procedure, the success of which has ensured it remains one of the foundations of ‘body contouring surgery’. Liposuction does more than reduce levels of fat; it can be used to improve and beautify the lines of a patient’s body. This versatile technique can reshape areas such as the hips, waist, calves, ankles, belly, flanks, abdomen, thighs, breasts, chest, back of the upper arms (‘bingo wings’), neck, chin, buttocks, ‘love handles’, and over-developed male breasts.

Liposuction does not improve the appearance of cellulite or stretch marks. It is not a remedy for general obesity and shouldn’t be viewed or undertaken as a weight loss procedure. Mr Khoda will assess the areas you are considering liposuction for and offer recommendations based on his years of experience. He will discuss your expectations, ensuring they are realistic.

FAQ’s

A thin tube called a cannula is inserted through small cuts in the skin. The cannula is manipulated to loosen fat in the targeted area, which is removed through the tube using a suction device. Often some form of technology is used and most commonly this is VASER liposuction. The machine generates ultrasonic waves which produce heat and melt the fat. This allows for the fat to be removed with suction and preserves the layers of skin, allowing for some retraction.

Liposculpture is a specialist, refined liposuction technique that is highly effective in recontouring parts of the body in people who are slim and healthy with stubborn, localised pockets of fat. Liposculpture relies on supple skin with good elasticity to cover the treated area and produce a taut, aesthetically pleasing result. Mr Khoda will discuss your suitability for liposculpture during your consultation.

We recommend that liposuction surgery be performed under general anaesthetic. Depending on the individual case, the operation usually takes between 1 and 3 hours. Some patients stay in hospital overnight, while others go home the same day.

During the first few days you are likely to experience some pain, discomfort, and stiffness, which can usually be managed with Paracetamol. Mr Khoda strongly advises resting for the first few days, and the wearing of the compression garment provided, which reduces swelling in the treated areas. You can expect some leakage of clear, blood-stained fluid from the incisions through which the canula was inserted.

Most patients are able to return to work from 3-4 days after surgery, and light activities can be resumed after 2-3 weeks. For the majority of people, normal activities can be resumed after 6 weeks, but take care not to over-exert yourself.

Mr Khoda also recommends that you begin to massage the treated areas after 1-2 weeks, and that this is performed on a regular basis while you are recovering.

All surgeries can lead to complications, but Mr Khoda works in a safe and consistent manner to minimise any risks. He uses the non-touch technique, avoiding skin contact with any part of the wound or any substance or surface that will come into contact with the wound, such as the inner surface of dressings. The most common complications with surgery are bleeding, haematomas, infection, numbness, alteration in nipple sensation, and the need to return to theatre for further procedures. Surgery also presents a risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Specific risks related to this surgery include asymmetrical results, rippling, dimpling, itching, and loose skin, fluid collection beneath the skin, skin discolouration, thrombophlebitis, and permanent loss of sensation (temporary loss of sensation almost always occurs but only lasts several months).
