For breast augmentation surgery, an incision is made alongside or below the breast, and the implant inserted by pocket placement – above the muscle (subfascial), or partially under the muscle (dual-plane). The incisions are stitched up and dressed so that recovery can begin. Mr Khoda uses the non-touch aseptic technique, which avoids contamination by not touching the implant and ensuring it makes no contact with the skin incision.

Surgery usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes, under general anaesthesia. At BK Aesthetics, breast augmentation is offered as a day-case surgery, meaning most patients don’t need to stay in the Marylebone-based hospital overnight.

After surgery you will need to rest at home for a week in order to fully recuperate. You will leave hospital wearing surgical dressings and a supportive surgical bra, which you will wear for around 6 weeks. In all, it takes about 3 months for implants to settle.

• Have someone drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours after surgery
• Book a week off work at a minimum
• Avoid using your arms and chest as much as possible – ask for help
• Avoid driving for at least a week
• Sleep on your back for at least a month after surgery
• Don’t exercise or engage in strenuous activities for at least a month.
• Take daily, gentle showers
• Keep the affected area out of direct sunlight for a year

Implants are long-lasting but not permanent. We advise regular self-examination and annual clinical checks. Implants only need to be exchanged if the breast changes with time, the patient chooses to do so, capsular contracture is experienced, or due to implant movement or rupture.

Any surgery carries a degree of risk. Mr Khoda will bring his expertise and skill to bear to mitigate your risk as much as possible. You will be given health advice relating to your surgery, the procedure itself will be carried out with safety utmost in mind, and after surgery, you’ll be offered detailed aftercare advice. Surgical complications include infection, bleeding, badly formed scarring, breast asymmetry, pain, numbness, skin sensitivity, fluid build-up, clots in the legs and lungs, implant malposition or rupture, capsular contracture, Breast Implant Illness (BII) and Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), which is a rare lymphoma affecting 1 in 25,000 patients.
