Inverted Nipple Correction

Treatment overview

Inverted nipples are a relatively common problem, which can be a source of concern and embarrassment to some women.

The most common time for nipples to become inverted is during puberty. The condition can be exaggerated by pregnancy and breast feeding, due to an overproduction of shortened collagen fibres that abbreviate and contract the milk ducts. There are non-surgical devices such as niplettes that can correct inverted nipples, but for women who have tried such remedies without success, surgery is the most effective remaining option.

FAQ’s

Whether or not to correct inverted nipples is a personal choice. Some women are content to live with inverted nipples, while others choose to have them corrected. For most women, it comes down to whether or not having inverted nipples undermines confidence. My Khoda is committed to helping women achieve their aesthetic and personal goals.

The surgery is far less invasive than breast augmentation, for example, and is usually performed under local anaesthetic in an outpatient setting, taking around 90 minutes.

The injection of local anaesthetic can sting a little, and after that you will be conscious of the surgeon’s touch but not of pain. We use sutures to repair the wounds and a sponge dressing to keep the nipple protruding while it heals.

The procedure is minor in comparison to most other breast surgeries, meaning that many women return to their daily activities without any downtime. The sutures need to remain in place for 2 weeks, after which they will be removed. If the surgical technique used involved the insertion of a small wire, this too will be removed after 2 weeks.

Yes, for at least the first 6 weeks following your surgery, allowing your scars to heal. Mr Khoda will assess your progress and sign you off to wear normal bras again at the appropriate time.

Mr Khoda keeps the blood supply intact during surgery, and brings his considerable skill and experience to bear to reduce the risk of sensation loss, but it’s important to bear in mind that although this risk can be managed and minimised, it cannot be entirely eradicated during any nipple surgery procedures.

All surgeries can lead to complications, but Mr Khoda works in a safe and consistent manner to minimise any risks. He uses the non-touch technique, avoiding skin contact with any part of the wound or any substance or surface that will come into contact with the wound, such as the inner surface of dressings. The most common complications with surgery are bleeding, haematomas, infection, numbness, alteration in nipple sensation, and the need to return to theatre for further procedures. Surgery also presents a risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
