Eyelids Surgery

Treatment overview

If you are concerned about excess skin on your upper or lower eyelids, you could be a suitable candidate for eyelids surgery.

A blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure on either the upper or lower eyelids to remove excess skin, sometimes known as ‘hooding’ on the upper lids and ‘eyebags’ on the lower lids. The purpose of eyelids surgery is to open up and rejuvenate the eye area, for a brighter, more youthful appearance. Blepharoplasty is one of My Khoda’s most popular procedures, known for excellent results, rapid recovery, and high patient satisfaction.

The aim of blepharoplasty is to improve the appearance of drooping, sagging eyes, which can make a person look older than they are and significantly undermine confidence. As well as revitalising our patients’ appearance, blepharoplasty removes redundant eyelid skin and fat that might be obscuring vision. Blepharoplasty is often combined with other cosmetic facial procedures such as a brow lift or facelift.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is performed as a day case surgery under general anaesthetic. Mr Khoda offers both general and local anaesthetic for upper eyelid blepharoplasty, depending on the patient’s preferences.

FAQ’s

Incisions are discretely and carefully placed in the natural creases of your eyelids to minimise visible scarring. Excess skin is removed, along with a small amount of underlying muscle or fat if necessary. In lower eyelids surgery, the skin is lifted by the surgeon to allow fat to be removed. The skin is then re-draped and excess skin removed. Any remaining laxity in the lower lid can also be corrected by a tightening procedure (canthopexy). Stitches are placed to allow recovery to begin.

The procedure takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the extent of surgery. If eyelids surgery is performed in conjunction with other procedures, the overall surgery time is longer.

After surgery, it is normal to experience bruising and swelling around the eye area, which can be reduced by the use of cold packs. The bruising and swelling are temporary, taking around 2 weeks to resolve. We will be in regular contact with you during your convalescence to ensure your recovery is on track. Stitches will be removed after 5-7 days.

  • Use eye ointment to reduce the risk of infection and keep your eyes lubricated
  • Practice forceful blinking from the evening of surgery for 1 week
  • Tape the lower eyelid at night for 2 weeks
  • Sleep on your back, propped up on pillows for 2 weeks
  • Avoid bending and lifting as much as possible.
  • Wear sunglasses indoors and outdoors to help reduce sensitivity.

Results from non-surgical treatment options might not be exactly the same as those achieved by surgery, but there are a host of skin rejuvenation options available through aesthetic clinics, including dermal fillers to help improve the appearance of ‘tear troughs’.

If you smoke, are taking blood-thinning (anti-coagulation) medication, have medical issues with your eyes or have significant health problems, Mr Khoda will assess you carefully and might advise you to wait before undergoing eyelids surgery, or even to avoid it altogether.

All surgeries can lead to complications, but Mr Khoda works in a safe and consistent manner to minimise any risks. He uses the non-touch technique, avoiding skin contact with any part of the wound or any substance or surface that will come into contact with the wound, such as the inner surface of dressings. The most common complications with surgery are bleeding, haematomas, infection, numbness, alteration in nipple sensation, and the need to return to theatre for further procedures. Surgery also presents a risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Some of the potential complications specific to eyelids surgery are ectropion (protruding eyelid), poor scarring, ptosis (drooping), lagophthalmos (the inability to fully close the upper eyelid), scleral show, ‘wide-eye’ appearance, scarring of the cornea, blindness (extremely rare) double vision (also extremely rare), dry eyes, eyelash loss, conjunctivitis, grittiness, and excessive watering.
